Boehner Highlights Republican Border Security Accomplishments as Secure Fence Act is Sent to White House for President Bush's Signature

WASHINGTON, D.C. - U.S. House Majority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) highlighted Republicans' efforts to secure America's borders as the Secure Fence Act - legislation recently passed by the House and Senate to authorize construction of 700 miles of reinforced fencing along the southwest border - was delivered to the White House today for President Bush's signature. Boehner issued the following statement:

"Despite troubling opposition from Capitol Hill Democrats, Republicans have made significant progress on border security this year. The Secure Fence Act is a major victory for Republicans' efforts to secure our borders against illegal entry and stop the flow of illegal immigration. Coupled with the Homeland Security conference report which will fund additional border agents, add more state-of-the-art technology and surveillance, and strengthen enforcement of our laws, the Secure Fence Act will make a real difference in securing our borders.

"While Republicans take action, House Democrats have repeatedly voted to weaken border enforcement, advocating a toothless approach that would repeat past mistakes that led to increased illegal immigration. The American people agree with Republicans that securing our borders must be our first priority in stopping illegal immigration, and it's just one more example of the clear difference between Republicans and Capitol Hill Democrats on one of the most pressing challenges of the day."
