Statement from Gubernatorial Candidate Chandler Woodcock On Agreement with Hospitals
October 11, 2006
"The recent announcement by John Baldacci that he has reached an agreement with the Maine Hospital Association to resolve all outstanding MaineCare debt owed to Maine hospitals is election year politics at its worst.
"The agreement is meaningless until the Legislature actually appropriates the money. The fact that the Governor waited until the last month of his term to address this important issue demonstrates his lack of fiscal leadership. If paying the hospitals back were a real priority for the current administration, they would have addressed it long before now - a month prior to the election.
"Maine has billions of dollars in unfunded liabilities to our retirement system, and we recently learned that the state is a half billion dollars short for the next two year budget cycle. If the state were being well run, it would not be big news when it announces that it's going to pay its bills."
