CONGRESSMAN YOUNG VOTES TO REFORM THE NATIONAL INSTITUTES OF HEALTH

Late Tuesday evening in the U.S. House of Representatives, Alaska Congressman Don Young voted

in support of H.R. 6164, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Reform Act of 2006. This bill authorizes an overall funding

increase for the NIH each year by 5% for fiscal years 2007-2009. This bill also limits the overall size of the NIH to 27

institutes and centers. This bill passed by a vote of 414 to 2.

"I supported this legislation because it corrects some of the inefficiencies in the NIH. This legislation increases transparency of NIH research activities and puts a stop to duplicate research being done. This bill keeps federal dollars from being wasted and gives us more bang for our buck," said Congressman Young.

"The bill creates a new, comprehensive electronic reporting system that will, for the first time, catalogue all of the research activities of the NIH in a standardized format. Instead of thousands of pages of reports from each of the individual research institutes and centers, the NIH Director will compile biennially a report that comprehensively lays out the strategic plans and research activities of the agency. This bill is not a band aid fix, but a long term solution to problems before they escalate out of control.
