Statement of John Kerry on New Census Numbers Showing Poverty Rising, Lower Incomes

Location: Unknown

September  28,  2003

John Kerry said, "Today we learned that George Bush's failed economic plan gave us another year of lower incomes and higher poverty rates—as if we needed more evidence that the Bush Administration's economic policies have failed Americans.   For two and a half years, George Bush sat on his hands while hard working middle class Americans suffer through job loss, reduced wages and increased costs for healthcare and college.   Middle class families are hurting and a need relief.  That is why I emphatically disagree with Democrats like Howard Dean and Dick Gephardt who want to raise taxes on the middle class.  After four years of a Bush economy killing jobs and draining paychecks, the last thing America's middle class families need is a Democrat who's going to raise their taxes."
