Dr. Coburn Statement on Passage Of Military Commissions Bill
U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK), released the following statement following the passage of S. 3930, the Military Commissions Bill:
"This legislation will give the president the tools he needs to protect American lives without compromising our core democratic values. The terrorists we've captured are not common criminals or even Prisoners of War, but are unlawful enemy combatants whose agenda is to end innocent lives. This bill will ensure that we may continue to prosecute detainees for heinous crimes in military commissions. At the same time, our intelligence and law enforcement agencies can continue to humanely detain and interrogate terrorists in order to prevent attacks and save lives."
"I would add, however, that this legislation in no way validates the Supreme Court's deeply flawed Hamdan decision. Terrorist organizations like al Qaeda who do not think twice about beheading civilians or murdering captured troops and are not signatories of the Geneva Convention are not entitled to Geneva Convention protections under the law. Yet, the fact that we treat our detainees humanely while our enemies do not is a sign of our strength, and should reassure Americans that in this global war the principles of freedom and justice will prevail over tyranny."
