WASHINGTON, DC - Republican Members of Congress today distributed draft language for an amendment to the energy bill that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to oil drilling. Senator John Kerry issued the following statement in response:
"At a time when America has just suffered the worst blackout in our history, it is shameful that this Administration and its Republican allies in Congress would try to use energy legislation that is so desperately needed to push its 'drill today, drill tomorrow,' energy policy.
"Republicans have tried to open ANWR before, and we stopped them. They are trying again, and we will stop them again. And in the future, when they trot out this same stale proposal as part of their outdated policy to keep America dependent on the oil produced by their campaign contributors, we will stop them then, too.
"We cannot continue to rely on the energy policies of the past. It is only by developing technologies that advance our energy, environmental, and economic needs that we will truly free ourselves from our dependence on foreign oil."
