Visclosky Introduces Legislation to Protect American Jobs and Stem the Flow of American Jobs being Shipped Overseas

The "Fighting for American Jobs Act" would put an end to American tax dollars going to companies that continue to outsource American jobs to foreign countries

Congressman Pete Visclosky today introduced legislation that would make it more difficult for companies to ship American jobs overseas, by denying federal funds for companies that continue to outsource.

"Too many good-paying American jobs are being shipped overseas, hurting our working families, our communities, and our country's long-term competitive position." said Congressman Visclosky. "Adding insult to injury is the fact that this Administration allows our tax dollars, in the form of contracts, loans, and subsidies, to go companies that engage in outsourcing."

Visclosky's "Fighting for American Jobs Act" (H.R. 6196) would prohibit business enterprises that lay-off a greater percentage of their United States workers than workers in other countries from receiving any Federal assistance. The legislation would require businesses that receive federal grants, loans and assistance to 1) provide the number of employees, both in the U.S. and overseas, and 2) provide the percentage of the workforce that has been laid off or forced to retire each year, both in the U.S. and overseas. The legislation would prohibit federal assistance to a business that lays off a greater percentage of workers in the U.S. than overseas within the previous year. To date, the federal government does not keep an accurate accounting of federal subsidies that go to companies that outsource American jobs.

"American companies should be investing in American jobs," said Visclosky. "By having accurate information on a company's offshore employment, no longer will American tax dollars help support companies that send our jobs overseas."

Visclosky co-sponsored similar legislation in the 108th Congress, but unfortunately the legislation was not enacted.
