Tester Stops at Harlowtown

Date: Aug. 18, 2006
Location: Harlowtown, MT

U.S. Senatorial candidate Jon Tester, a Democrat, made a stop in Harlowton last Friday, Aug. 18, as part of his farm truck "Real Energy, Real Change" tour throughout the eastern part of the state.

He shared his views on the future of energy in Montana stressing the rising costs of fuel and record profits for oil companies. "Fuel for this year's harvest cost me nearly 50 percent more this year than it did last year. We are tired of paying dearly for a failed energy policy," said the Big Sandy farmer.

He fielded questions from a hand-full of area residents who attended the quickly planned event. Topics ranged from country of origin labeling, the new farm bill and the war in Iraq. An audience member asked what one person could do in Washington DC to initiate the "change."

The candidate felt that talking to others constantly, presenting Montana's concerns and working with fellow senators could get much accomplished.

He praised the Judith Gap Wind Farm project as a success story in renewable energy and as President of the Montana Senate he was instrumental in lowering taxes for wind generation facilities like the wind farm.

Tester drove to Big Timber after his Harlowton stop and took his energy listening sessions to Columbus, Colstrip, Miles City, Glendive, Sidney and Glasgow. Stops were also planned in Crow Agency, Forsyth, Culbertson, Wolf Point, Malta and Harlem.

Saturday Tester unveiled his energy policy in Billings.

Tester is challenging Republican Sen. Conrad Burns this fall. Burns is running for his fourth term in the U.S. Senate.

The Wheatland County Democrats provided refreshments for Friday's gathering.
