Van Taylor Concerned for Future Air Quality in Central Texas

Further Research on Impact of Coal Plant Pollution Needed

WACO - - Recent studies by the Environ firm and the Houston Advanced Research Center revealed that future plans of adding 11 new coal-fired power plants to Central Texas could increase Waco's summer ozone levels by more than three parts per billion, and raise air quality issues in McLennan, Robertson and Limestone Counties.

Congressional Candidate Van Taylor has called for further study on the impact of Central Texas air quality and for assurances that companies are taking every possible step to minimize environmental impact.

"My wife and I chose to raise our family in Central Texas because of the quality of life it offers, the clean air we enjoy here is part of that appeal," said Taylor of the news on the study. "While Central Texas families deserve low cost energy, there are new technologies available to help us maintain the fine balance between progress and the health of our families."

Taylor continued, "Further studies must be implemented on the effect of these proposed plants on air quality. To date, ground-level air monitoring has not been conducted in Central Texas, nor does the state monitor ozone levels in Waco. Studies should be initiated to assess the impact of these plants before we walk down a path that could ultimately harm our communities. In addition, we ought to be assured that clean air technologies such as gasification will be implemented on these plants, should they be installed. We have a continuous battle for clean water here in Waco, and just as the community demands clean water, the community demands clean air."
