Chris Bell Makes Stop At Caddo Lake

Democratic nominee for governor speaks about environment Longview News-Journal

Make no mistake about it, the environment matters, says Chris Bell, the Democratic nominee for governor.

"Rick Perry loves to tell us how proud he is of Texas," Bell said, blasting Perry for his part in raiding state park funds.
"Rick Perry loves to tell us how proud he is of Texas," Bell said, blasting Perry for his part in raiding state park funds. "I just wish that sometimes he would act that way. Now that state parks are a big issue, Rick Perry is promising to end the parks tax raid. Sorry Rick, but trusting you to protect state parks is like asking an arsonist to put out a fire."

Bell addressed a small group of people Saturday from the fishing pier of Caddo Lake State Park. Bell and Perry, along with independents Kinky Friedman and Carole Keeton Strayhorn and Libertarian James Werner, are running for governor in the November election.

On the second stop of his state parks tour, Bell answered questions and spoke briefly about his Healthy Texas environmental plan, before taking a boat tour of the lake.

"My Healthy Texas environmental plan called for an end to the raid on the parks tax a week before Rick Perry's did," Bell said.

Bell said his plan called for stopping the raid on a sporting goods tax to restore park funding. Perry announced his support for the same legislation a week later, he said.

"Perry and Strayhorn brag about balanced budgets but it is all a shell game to them," Bell said. "Texans pay a tax on sporting goods that was specifically created to fund parks, but instead the money gets raided for other projects while entrance fees at the parks are jacked up to make the difference."
