Education: Excellence for All

Education is important in the Goldmark household. My parents supported my education at my local high school in Okanogan. From that educational foundation, I went on to earn a bachelor's degree at Haverford College, a Ph.D. at the University of California at Berkeley, and a post-doctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School.

Each of my five children has received an excellent education at Okanogan High School. Four have completed college degrees and one is pursuing a degree. I served for eight years as a member of the Okanogan School Board and for 10 years on the Board of Regents at Washington State University which is responsible for the overall administration of the university.

I believe that greater investment and support for our schools is vital to our future. Federal testing requirements set the bar high, and we owe it to every child to make sure the resources are there to help them succeed.

* I will support job training programs, community and technical colleges, and a world-class university system to assure that we have the workforce to attract and keep good jobs in our region.
* I will work to restore the land grant formula funds for Washington State University that have been cut by the federal government.
* I will work to insure that Congress provides adequate funding to schools for the "No Child Left Behind" initiative.
* I will work to restore the Pell Grants and to keep interest rates on those loans low to encourage more young people to continue their education.
