CONGRESSWOMAN MARY BONO REACTS TO TERRORIST PLOT

Today, Congresswoman Mary Bono (CA-45) issued the following statement in response to the terrorist plot to infiltrate and bring down airline flights departing from Heathrow Airport (London, England) en-route to the United States:

"This alarming incident emphasizes the need to safeguard our national security and protect our borders. The detention of these terrorists does not eliminate the situation or the threat. I applaud the work of our British allies and commend the communication and cooperative efforts between the British Intelligence organizations and the US Department of Homeland Security. Terrorist organizations run extensive networks, and we must continue to effectively work with our global allies to fight the ongoing threat posed by these groups," stated Bono.

In the United Kingdom, it is the first time the red alert level, which indicates severe risk of terrorist attacks, has been instigated since its inception.

"Since the September 11 attacks, Congress has aggressively pushed to empower the American people with the tools necessary to improve intelligence exchange and increase oversight over our nation's security. A key example of that effort has been the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, which has proven its strength in working with the Transportation Security Administration and with Border Patrol. Terrorists are relentless in their efforts to breach our borders, and we must never forget and never back down," expressed Bono.

The Department of Homeland Security has immediately ordered that U.S. airports ban all liquids and gels from carry-on luggage, including toothpaste, makeup, and suntan lotion. Baby formula and medicines are exempted if proven to be safe substances at security airport checkpoints.

"I commend the traveling public for their vigilance and patience. The inconveniences and sacrifices experienced are to ensure the safety of our nation and its citizens. I encourage those who plan to travel regionally and internationally to visit the Department of Homeland Security website at www.dhs.gov and review up-to-date information on airport security related information. I would also advise those travelers to visit their departure airport's website to learn tips on expediting the security checkpoint process and any other pertinent information," added Congresswoman Mary Bono.
