'President's plan for New Source Review is nothing more than Old School Political Payback to the industry lobbyists who wrote the Bush energy plan,' says Kerry

WASHINGTON, DC -

Just as he has with 'compassionate conservative' and 'no child left behind,' George W. Bush has made a mockery of the words 'environmental protection.' His decision to exempt this country's biggest polluters from responsibility when they pump hundreds of thousands of tons of toxics into our air is the most shameful and brazen giveaway to special interests we've witnessed on this President's watch. This plan for New Source Review is nothing more than Old School Political Payback to the industry lobbyists who wrote the Bush energy plan.

As reported earlier this week, the Bush Administration's energy task force, led by Dick Cheney, tried to hide their secret meetings with industry lobbyists. Now they want to allow those same polluters to increase their profits while average Americans pay the cost through dirtier air, more childhood asthma, and an increase in respiratory disease.

Environmental protection is not just the name of a government agency, Mr. President. It is a commitment to the notion that clean air is better for the future of this nation than forcing our citizens to breathe in pollutants. We need a president who understands that a true commitment to our environment cannot be achieved by rewarding irresponsible corporate polluters; it can only be achieved by putting the health and well being of the American people first.
