Day Four - Laffey continues to stonewall on stem cell research
Day four and Steve Laffey still refuses to let Rhode Islanders know if he supports embryonic stem cell research. Steve Laffey's silence contradicts an earlier press release in which he stated "Senator Chafee and I . . . disagree on a number of critical issues, and Rhode Island voters deserve to know what those differences are" (Laffey for Senate, Press Release, May 9, 2006).
"I am at a loss. How can Steve Laffey not have an opinion on one of the most important public health issues facing us today," said U.S. Senator Lincoln Chafee. "The scientific community has shown overwhelmingly that stem cell research has the potential to improve treatment for and possibly defeat diseases such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and multiple sclerosis. I agree with Mr. Laffey, Rhode Islanders do deserve to know where we stand on critical issues. That's why I think that he needs to stop ducking the question and let Rhode Islanders know if he supports or opposes embryonic stem cell research."
