Musgrave Supports Special Interests, Opposes Disease Cures

Marilyn Musgrave would rather let Americans suffer than stand up to President Bush.

WASHINGTON, D.C.—For the second time this year, Marilyn Musgrave bowed down to special interests who oppose federal funding of research into disease cures, and has voted along with the President to kill the bipartisan Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act.

"What is Marilyn Musgrave saying to people whose family members are fighting diseases like Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and diabetes?" State Rep. Angie Paccione said. "She obviously has no compassion for Americans who suffer day in and day out."

Paccione said that Musgrave's opposition to federal funding of stem cell research is at odds with science, as well as the sentiments of three out of four Americans.

"She's ignoring sound science, she's paying no heed to medical experts, and she's turning her back on the American people," Paccione said. "She's been in the pocket of special interests for so long that she has completely lost touch with America."

Paccione has been a strong supporter of stem cell research to cure disease. In Colorado's last legislative session, Paccione sponsored a bipartisan resolution calling on the U.S. Senate to support the Stem Cell Research Enhancement Act, which it did, and on Tuesday Paccione called on President Bush not to veto it.

"Unfortunately, the President chose to play politics with the lives of Americans, and Marilyn caved in and would rather let Americans suffer than stand up to President Bush and to the special interests," Paccione said. "Unlike Marilyn, I will be a principled leader who stands up for the American people and against the special interests."
