Support The President
As you can tell from our campaign's very first TV spots, there is one particular issue I care deeply about. And that is the responsibility for a Congressman from Tennessee - especially a conservative, Republican Congressman - to support President Bush and the war on terror.
Too many Americans seem to have forgotten what is at stake in the war on terror and the war in Iraq - but not our Commander-in-Chief. This is a President whose moral, Christian compass is right on target and who is leading the fight for our very way of life.
These days, the so-called political "experts" are telling Republican candidates to keep their distance from a President with a 30% approval rating if they want to get elected. Unfortunately, I have seen some of that sort of thinking right here in East Tennessee.
They couldn't be more wrong.
They are wrong if they think that running from the President will make this country safer. They are wrong if they believe the people of East Tennessee do not support this President. And Republican candidates are wrong if they rely on poll numbers to decide what to do.
Let me tell you exactly where I stand.
I stand with a President who understands just what is at stake in this fight - and with a Commander-in-Chief who believes we have a moral obligation to fight for our way of life and the values on which this country was founded - and which is under attack every day by radical Islam.
I stand in opposition to Monday morning quarterbacks like the New York Times and Ted Kennedy who hurt our troops when they attack our President. They are aiding and abetting the enemy. Period.
And I stand in contrast to those Republicans - some here in Tennessee - who try to distance themselves from the President. They do the most damage of all - and they should be ashamed.
I will never be a Congressman who shrinks from supporting our troops and their Commander-in-Chief, even if it costs me some votes. Because I could not live with myself if I acted like some slick politician who just says what he thinks will get him elected. For as it says in the Bible: "What profit a man if he gains the world - but loses his soul?"
The soul of our nation was built on the principles and lessons I learned as a child growing up right here in my home and in East Tennessee. As your Congressman, I will never forget where I come from - what I was taught - and the job you expect me to do.
And that job starts with supporting President Bush in the war on terror and in Iraq. Not because it's the popular thing to do - but because it is the right thing to do.
If you feel as I do, don't let your support stop here. I would encourage you to send a message directly to the White House and to President Bush that we here in our part of Tennessee think he is doing the right thing and we are behind him.
