2006 Governor's School for Excellence to Start at University of Delaware on Sunday
Newark - Governor Ruth Ann Minner will make a visit next week to the 2006 Governor's School for Excellence, which will host 82 academic students and 55 visual and performing arts students from private and public schools in Delaware for the annual and prestigious week-long program at the University of Delaware.
The rising juniors selected for this year's highly competitive program excel in academics and the arts, including theatre, music and the visual arts. They are among the best from Delaware's public, parochial and private high schools.
"Since 1979, the Governor's School for Excellence has provided students with an opportunity to gather with students from other schools in Delaware to face academic challenges and gain a new appreciation for the visual and performing arts while experiencing personal growth and developing leadership skills," Gov. Minner said. "I am proud of these students and am pleased they have this opportunity to share their talents and skills while also making new friends and enjoying a week they will remember for the rest of their lives."
Governor's School starts Sunday and ends Saturday, July 22. It is a joint effort by the State of Delaware, the University of Delaware's Professional and Continuing Education Divisions, the Governor's Office and the Department of Education. Students are nominated through their schools and selected through a highly competitive application process.
A variety of activities is scheduled for students in both the academic and arts programs. The closing ceremonies will feature a display of student work, including original art, as well as dramatic and musical performances by attendees.
Gov. Minner will visit students at this year's Governor's School on Monday about 1:30 p.m.
