The Speech From The Take Back The House Rally, 2/4/06
The native of California from the San Gabiel Valley, has lived in the area of her district for almost all of her life, has worked in the corporate world, she understands the corporate world having been at Disney. She's been an associate professor. She got on the school board in Cardiff. She's a real grassroots, up-from-the-bottom, take-it-from-the top Democrat who's going to take it back for us on April 11th, our good friend, Francine Busby.
This is Great! The only thing George Bush has done right is to unite the Democrats to beat him and everyone in Congress.
This is great. You know when I ran last time, I ran, I stepped out of my home and said, "I'm running because I can't take it anymore."
And I found that there were a lot of Democrats in my district that were just waiting for somebody to latch on to because they couldn't take it anymore either. And that's how we grew our campaign. One at a time. Until we built the biggest grassroots campaign in a district. The biggest grassroots Congressional campaign in the country. In a district where we didn't have a Democratic presence or a prayer just 2 years ago. So, ...
So, what I'm here to say, I am the proof that each and every one of us can make a difference and I never want to hear anyone say it's not worth fighting 'cos we can't win. We can't win if we don't fight, and we've proved that.
Last year I ran because we had to fight. This time I ran because we needed to do it again and build on our momentum. But with the change. I never thought I'd thank Duke Cunningham for ANYTHING!, but I thank him for opening a door for the possibility for us, because we're not running because it's the right thing to do, we're running to WIN this time.
And I want you to know that I am honored and I am ready to lead this charge, but I know it's not about Francine Busby, this is not about Duke Cunningham and the 50th district anymore. This is about taking back this country.
I know that you are here with me today, not because you want to get one person elected in one place. Together what we want to do is win the first Congressional race in the entire country in Duke Cunningham's back yard and send a message of change across this country that will empower people like you, like me, like these candidates across the country to work as we are to change, to take back this House.
Thank you. And so I am running. I'm running to restore honesty and integrity to the representation in my district, to the representation in Congress and to the reputation of this country that we love. And we want back.
And we can do it. I have seen a sea change in my district and these candidates are going to see the same change in their districts. In a district that has traditionally been called a solidly Republican district, our polls show that only 35% of the voters are even thinking of voting Republican.
Our polls show, in a Republican leaning district, as we know in California, all of our districts are leaning one way or the other quite a bit, our polls show that people believe that it's time for the Democratic message for change instead of the Republican message of more of the same.
And to give these candidates more encouragement, our polls show again in our right-leaning district, that people want to elect members of Congress that will be a check-and-balance to Bush and not supporting his agenda.
And so, it's not again that we're pipe-dreaming here. This is about change. This is about the 49% of the country that wants to see a Democratic Congress. This is about my district that is going to change and empower that change. And about these candidates that are going to work very hard to give their constituents an alternative to this administration that has done so much -- so much -- to take our country in the wrong direction.
So thank you for me. Thank you for being here for you. Thank you for being here for every one who loves this country who wants to take it back. Take it back and put it in the right direction by taking this House back.
So thank you for being here, and I can't wait to greet you personally on those busses for Busby. Thank you, thank you.
