JOHN KERRY: WASHINGTON OUT OF TOUCH WITH MILLIONS OF AMERICANS TRYING TO MAKE ENDS MEET
"Every American deserves a shot at the American dream. Washington shows just how out of touch it is when Congress gives itself a raise time and again but won't do the same for millions of workers.
"Since President Bush took office, the number of Americans living in poverty has increased by more than 5 million. Today 37 million Americans live in poverty, 13 million of them are children, most of whom live with at least one working parent. That's not how things should be in America. No American working full time should live below the poverty line. No one should be forced to choose between paying for either food or rent, their children's health care or electricity. But instead of providing people with realistic wages for hard working Americans, the Republican leadership in Washington has repeatedly turned its back on these families by refusing to raise the minimum wage in almost 10 years.
"No one has fought harder to raise the minimum wage than Ted Kennedy, and I applaud all his decades-long commitment to making this a reality."
