STATEMENT BY CONGRESSMAN JEB BRADLEY ON THE DEATH OF AL-QAEDA LEADER ABU MUSAB AL-ZARQAWI
First District Congressman Jeb Bradley, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, today issued the following statement regarding the death of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, a leader in the terrorist group al-Qaeda whose gruesome attacks targeted American troops, Iraqi Security Forces, and Iraqi civilians with suicide bombings and improvised explosive devices:
"I commend the American troops, who worked cooperatively with Iraqi forces to act on Iraqi intelligence, for their commitment and perseverance in rooting out a dangerous terrorist in the Middle East. While the death of al-Zarqawi demonstrates improved intelligence and coordination with Iraqi Security Forces, it is unrealistic to expect an immediate end to terrorist violence.
"Of equal importance, the Prime Minister of Iraq today named a Minister of Defense, a Minister of the Interior, and a new Minister of State for National Security. These appointments complete the formation of a democratically-elected government in Iraq and are tangible signs of progress. The road to a free and sovereign Iraq remains difficult. However, both of these events will help the new Iraqi government and security forces to be able to provide stability and lessen the role of U.S. troops in the region."
