Statement from Rep. John Barrow on the Death of Iraq's al-Qaeda Leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi
Following this morning's news that U.S. and Iraqi forces had located and killed Iraq's al-Qaeda leader, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, 12th District Georgia Congressman John Barrow (D-Savannah) released the following statement:
"The elimination of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is an important victory in the battle for Democracy in Iraq, but it's also evidence that success takes time. We set out to remove Saddam Hussein from power, and we got him. We went after al-Zarqawi, and we got him, too. Neither of these tasks was easy, and both required great sacrifice - but we succeeded in doing both. Now it's time to find Osama bin Laden - the man most responsible for 9/11.
"While we should celebrate today's news, we need to remember that al-Zarqawi is only one piece in a much larger puzzle that is the global War on Terror. Winning that war requires continued national confidence in our efforts and unwavering support for the men and women serving in uniform.
"Yesterday's bombing raid on the Iraqi village of Hibhib was coordinated and planned with the help of our allies in Iraq and members of our international coalition - and that speaks volumes about the progress we're seeing in Iraq.
"Today, our troops are still in harm's way - as they will be for many more days to come. They need everyone's support in order to finish the job and come home safely."
