Ros-Lehtinen Applauds Senate Passage of Emergency Supplemental Providing Disaster Assistance to Commercial Fishing Industry
Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is delighted by today's Senate passage of the FY2006 Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act for Defense, the Global War on Terror, and Hurricane Recovery, which provides $1.085 billion to the devastated commercial and recreational fishing industries affected by last years hurricanes. The bill passed in the Senate by a vote of 77-21.
Said Ros-Lehtinen: "I will work hard to keep the fisheries funding included in the final report language when the two chambers go to Conference. I applaud the efforts of my Colleagues in the Senate for supporting this funding throughout the Senate's consideration of the bill."
This funding package, which has the full support of the Florida Department of Agriculture and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission, provides $100 million in direct assistance for fishers and seafood workers for facilities repair and $200 million for the replacement of lost or damaged fishing gear.
Added Ros-Lehtinen: "I have asked my colleagues in both chambers to help me support this crucially needed funding for Florida's beleaguered fishermen. I will continue to lobby on behalf of the fishermen, lobstermen, and their families who have suffered in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina, Rita, and Wilma. I am optimistic, yet much work needs to be done to ensure that this funding package remains in the final piece of legislation."
