Rogers Calls for Quick Passage of Mine Safety Legislation

U.S. Representative Harold "Hal" Rogers (KY-05) issued the following statement today regarding efforts by Rep. George Miller (D-CA) to block mine safety legislation from moving forward in the U.S. House of Representatives:

"I am flabbergasted that Mr. Miller is engaging in jurisdictional turf wars and putting politics ahead of the safety of our miners. The accident in Harlan County underscores the need for immediate mining reform. This legislation has widespread, bipartisan support and is our best chance for getting much needed protections quickly in place. We need to make the most of this unique opportunity and pass this legislation immediately."

On Wednesday, the U.S. Senate passed S. 2803, the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act). Rogers believes the MINER Act should be approved this week by the U.S. House of Representatives so President Bush can quickly sign the bill into law.
