Davis' Statement Following President Bush's Immigration Speech

Following President Bush's speech tonight on immigration, Congressman Geoff Davis issued the following statement:

"President Bush's continued efforts at making border security and enforcement the top priority in the struggle with illegal immigration are encouraging.

"While I support the limited, temporary use of National Guard troops on the border, it is essential that we do not allow this practice to become institutionalized. This is a necessary and prudent measure to secure our borders in the short term while we develop long term solutions and work to increase the size of the border patrol. These proposals show a steadfast commitment to ending illegal immigration.

"I remain opposed to amnesty. Rewarding lawbreakers sends the wrong message to those who have attained legal citizenship. Additionally, I recognize the need for an adequate labor supply. I believe we must provide employers with a more workable system and hold those accountable who knowingly hire illegals."
