Pelosi: Give Mothers a Real Mother's Day Present by Extending Prescription Drug Deadline
House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the upcoming Medicare prescription drug program enrollment deadline, which is on Monday, May 15th. Millions of seniors and disabled citizens who do not sign up for this confusing benefit will be subjected to a lifelong penalty.
"This year Republicans have an opportunity to give mothers a real Mother's Day present by extending the Medicare prescription drug benefit deadline. Instead, many mothers and millions of other Americans will be given a raw deal: a Bush prescription drug tax for life.
"Many seniors are confused by the complicated benefit - and understandably so. When seniors telephoned the call centers run by the Bush Administration to ask which Medicare prescription drug plan would save them the most money, they were given the wrong answer 60 percent of the time. Democrats stand united to extend the deadline and end the tax.
"The President has already announced that he will waive the tax for low-income Americans. He needs to finish the job and waive the tax for everyone.
"The Republican prescription drug benefit works for the few, but not the many. To make it work for all seniors and people with disabilities, it needs clarity, and it needs common sense. Democrats are ready to provide both."
