Governor Minner Issues Statement on Christina School District

Governor Ruth Ann Minner is releasing the following statement following a meeting with officials from the Christina School District about the district's financial situation:

"The leadership of the Christina School District has acknowledged that the district is in a critical financial situation and has asked for assistance in resolving this matter, with the most immediate concern being to meet the payroll deadline for this week. I have committed to Dr. Lowery my support for a state-backed, no-interest loan which my financial team will work with district officials to expedite this week to ensure that the district will be able to pay its employees on Friday.

As I have stated on prior occasions, we need to resolve this matter as quickly as possible to ensure that the district's students are not negatively affected. Tomorrow I will present draft legislation to the General Assembly that will outline a process to implement this loan, as well as safeguards to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future. I look forward to the state and district financial teams working together to solve this problem as quickly as possible."
