Dear Chairmen and Ranking Members,

We are writing to express our full support for the C-17 Globemaster III program, including $227.5 million for advance procurement funding included in the Senate-passed version of the Defense Supplemental Spending bill. In addition, we are respectfully requesting additional funding for the C-17 aircraft in the FY 2007 Department of Defense Appropriations bill.

The C-17 Globemaster III is the Air Force's premier tactical transport aircraft. It has the capability to deliver more cargo and troops than other aircraft and its ability to utilize short unimproved runways found in many combat and humanitarian relief missions is invaluable. The continued production of the C-17 ensures America's airlift needs will continue to be met in the Global War on Terror and humanitarian relief missions around the world.

Support of the $227.5 million in the Defense Supplemental Spending conference report and the FY 2007 Defense Appropriations bill will continue production of this highly successful aircraft past 2008. Further, it will reinforce your commitment to the multi-year purchase language which was included in H.R. 2863, last year's Defense Appropriations conference report, and H.R. 1815, the National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2006.

While continued production of the C-17 provides jobs in our states, the aircraft is clearly a vital component of the best military in the world and the Air Force has previously stated they need more than the 180 aircraft included in the President's Budget request. As our country enters into its fifth year of this sustained war on fighting terrorism, please support the continued procurement of this necessary airlift resource.

Thank you in advance for your support of the C-17 aircraft and the many other programs which provide the needed tools for our men and women to fight successfully against the enemies of our country.

Sincerely,

Arnold Schwarzenegger
