THOMPSON CALLS TRANSPORTATION WORKER ID LONG OVERDUE

Congressman Bennie G. Thompson (D-MS), Ranking Member of the Committee on Homeland Security, issued the following statement regarding today's announcement by the Department of Homeland Security on the Transportation Worker Identification Card (TWIC):

"I find the timing of this announcement very convenient seeing as Congress is considering a port security bill tomorrow. It appears that DHS steps up to the plate to protect our national security only when the cameras are rolling and the whole world is watching.

"Congress required TWIC to be implemented three years ago. While I am pleased to see some progress, I only hope, when the cameras turn off, this program isn't lost in the shuffle like other DHS programs."
