Crowley Gives Republican Higher Ed Bill a Failing Grade

Washington, DC - U.S. Congressman Joseph Crowley (NY-07) today voted in opposition to the Republican-proposed Higher Education Reauthorization Act (HR 609), as the legislation effectively denies students access to college loan money. The legislation passed in the House of Representatives largely along party lines of 221-199.

"This bill does nothing to reverse the raid on student aid that would grossly eliminate the number of student loans available. In effect, this legislation would deny 1,100 students in northwest Queens and the east Bronx, and 13,000 kids citywide, the chance of getting a college education," said Crowley, a Chief Deputy Whip in the Democratic Caucus. "The alternative version of this bill, which I supported, would reverse the gutting of student loan funds, and provide families with the financial help they need."
