Congressman Murphy Honored for Commitment to Jobs and Economic Growth

Washington, Mar 15 -

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce today presented Congressman Tim Murphy (PA-18) with the "Spirit of Enterprise" award for his pro-economic growth agenda during the first session of the 109th Congress. Representative Murphy received a 92 percent rating on Chamber-designated "key votes."

"As Southwestern Pennsylvania continues to grow, we need strong economic policies that create jobs and a well-trained, flexible workforce," said Congressman Murphy, who has a 95 percent lifetime rating from the Chamber. "The tax cuts, the Energy Policy Act, and the highway bill all passed by Congress have produced jobs and helped the region's economy. In January, Pennsylvania's unemployment fell to 4.4 percent, its lowest level in nearly five years. In the last year, 54,000 more people found jobs."

"Tim is a leader who has fought for legislation to spur job creation, increase productivity and keep our economy growing." said Thomas J. Donohue, Chamber President and CEO. "We're proud to present him with this award on behalf of America's businesses, both large and small."

During the first session of the 109th Congress, the Chamber scored 27 House votes as key votes. The key votes included patient safety, medical liability reform, bankruptcy reform, a comprehensive energy bill, transportation reauthorization legislation, and the U.S.-Dominican Republic-Central America Free Trade Agreement.

"Local companies Westinghouse Nuclear, Consol Energy, and Allegheny Energy each will hire nearly 500 new workers throughout 2006 due to the incentives on exploration and development in the energy bill," Murphy concluded. "Improvements to our roads and waterways included in the transportation bill will help local business ship goods to the rest of the country. And families will have more money in their pocket as a result of the tax cuts. While these are significant accomplishments, we must continue creating more jobs and growing the economy in Southwestern Pennsylvania."
