Rogers' NASCAR - HBCU Resolution Passes House

Honors partnership to increase automotive industry jobs for minorities

Washington, D.C. - Congressman Mike Rogers praised the House of Representatives today for passing his resolution honoring NASCAR's partnership with Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs).

Rogers said H. Res. 677, a resolution recognizing the NASCAR-HBCU Consortium, would help raise awareness of the new initiative, which focuses on increasing the number and quality of job opportunities for African American students in racing, technology, automotive safety and sports marketing. Rogers introduced the resolution earlier this month with Rep. Mel Watt (D-NC), and with the support of House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-IL).

"Alabama's automotive industry continues to grow, and it is critical all our young folks have the skills to compete for these jobs," Rogers said. "I hope this initiative helps bring together some of East Alabama's most important institutions, and I thank Speaker Hastert and my colleagues in the House for recognizing their importance today."

Rogers said the Third District is home to the Talladega Superspeedway as well as three HBCUs: Alabama State University in Montgomery, Talladega College in Talladega, and Tuskegee University in Macon County. He said officials from the partnership have been in the process of enrolling each of these institutions in the effort.

Rogers said the resolution was signed by 44 co-sponsors, and passed the House today on a voice vote.
