Simpson Reacts to State of the Union
Washington, D.C. - Idaho Congressman Mike Simpson issued the following statement in response to President George W. Bush's State of the Union Address:
"President Bush tonight presented a hopeful, honest, and forward-looking picture of the state of our nation and the world in which we live," Simpson said.
"I was impressed by the way President Bush articulated an aggressive strategy and strong commitment to ensuring further growth in our economy and improving our nation's healthcare system," said Simpson. "The President's plan for economic recovery is correctly focused on one simple goal - creating new jobs for American workers. President Bush inherited a crumbling economy and in three short years his policies have revived our nation's economic engine and brought new hope to America's working men and women. There is still a lot of work to do to make sure everyone who wants a job will have one - but President Bush has shown again tonight that he is the man who can make it happen."
"I also firmly believe that our nation's economic security and national security go hand-in-hand. Put simply, you cannot have one without the other in this day of a nameless, faceless enemy who desires to harm both. The President understands this reality and has masterfully grown our economy while dramatically improving our national security,"
"No President since perhaps JFK, and possibly FDR, has faced such a persistent and deadly threat to our nation and its citizens," said Simpson. "From Afghanistan to Iraq and all of the cowardly hiding spots in between, President Bush has stood firm against terrorism and demonstrated our nation's resolve to wipe this plague from the face of the earth. We're making tremendous progress in Iraq, witnessing democracy take hold in Afghanistan, marginalizing dictatorial rulers in Libya and Iran, and bringing new hope for peace and stability in the Middle East. Those are real accomplishments for which this President should be very proud."
