Levin Urges DHS to Release Its Findings on the Screening of Trash Trucks at U.S.-Canada Border

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., made the following statement regarding the Department of Homeland Security's refusal to release the findings of its recent investigation into the screening of trash trucks entering the United States from Canada. At a Senate hearing yesterday, Levin voiced his serious concerns with the report's findings to DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff and urged him to make the findings available publicly.

"I am greatly troubled by the Department of Homeland Security's refusal to release the findings of its investigation into the screening of trash trucks entering the United States from Canada. The report was prepared pursuant to a 2003 request I made with Sen. Stabenow and Rep. Dingell for an investigation into the screening process of municipal solid waste trucks crossing the border; we argued that, for national security reasons, these shipments must be screened as effectively as other types of cargo entering the country. After reading the report, I am more convinced than ever that the inability to effectively inspect trash trucks entering the U.S. from Canada is a threat both to our security and our environment.

"I am pursuing a number of avenues along with Sen. Stabenow and Rep. Dingell to try to get the document released to the public."
