KING CALLS ON POSTAL OFFICIALS FOR ANSWERS

SIOUX CENTER -- In the ongoing effort to give Sioux City residents a voice in the fate of Sioux City's mail processing center, U.S. Congressman Steve King today examined operations of Sioux City's mail processing facility and represented northwest Iowans at a meeting with USPS officials.

Since USPS announced its intention in November to conduct a survey and possibly relocate Sioux City's mail processing center, King has demanded USPS give Sioux City residents the opportunity to submit a competing business model and receive input from Northwest Iowans. He has met with several high-ranking postal officials in Washington, D.C.

"We are simply requesting the Postal Service give us information about the scope of their study, the plan for consolidation and the cost of it and their speculation on the impact to business and residents of this area," said King. "To date, they have rebuffed virtually every request, but I will continue to push for the level of transparency and accountability that the people of western Iowa expect."

"If the Postal Service is really 'happy to hear' from their customers, it's only fair they consult the people this facility will effect and give them the opportunity to voice their opinion before they reach a decision," added King.

On Wednesday, a written submission in the Sioux City Journal by Azeezaly S. Jaffer, a Postal Official from Washington, D.C., stated the USPS is "happy to hear" from its customers.
