Math and Science: A Solid Foundation to Compete in a Global Economy

February 10, 2006

Greetings residents of Texas District 24. Last Friday I had the honor of greeting President George W. Bush as he stepped off Air Force One upon his arrival D/FW Airport. Being in his presence is a very humbling and awe-inspiring experience. It also brings me back to the days when, as a member of the Texas House, I worked with then-Governor Bush on many initiatives to improve this great state.

The purpose of the president and First Lady Mrs. Bush's trip to the Metroplex was to visit a local magnet school. They received a science lesson from students at the school. This visit was part of the president's larger efforts to improve U.S. math and science instruction. As a member of the House Education and Workforce Committee and lifelong education advocate, this issue is very significant to me as well.

In order for America to remain a global leader in innovation and opportunity, we must give our children a solid foundation in math and science. The president's "American Competitiveness Initiative" proposes more Federal support to improve the quality of math, science, and technological education in our K-12 schools. The initiative aims to engage students in rigorous courses that teach important analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.

The scheme calls for new and expanded programs, such as the training of additional teachers to lead Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate math and science classes in order to expand access to AP/IB coursework. It proposes an Adjunct Teacher Corps to encourage math and science professionals to become adjunct high school teachers. Also it creates a "Math Now" program for elementary and middle school students to promote promising and research-based practices in math instruction, prepare students for rigorous math courses, and diagnose and remedy math-deficient students.

We are fortunate to live an area that is blessed with outstanding schools and educators. We are proud of the quality of education that they provide to local students. In today's global economy, however, it is important to raise the bar of excellence even higher. Today's students must be prepared to compete effectively on an international level.

Our students are the future leaders, innovators, and trailblazers of this great nation. It is our responsibility to equip them with proper skills so that they can maintain and strengthen America's standing as a global economic superpower. I look forward to working with Congress and the president on this mission to enhance education and future opportunities for our children.
