Dr. Coburn Hails Confirmation Of Judge Samuel Alito
U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) today released the following statement on the confirmation of Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court of the United States. Alito was confirmed by a vote of 58 to 42.
"I'm pleased 57 of my colleagues joined me in voting to confirm Judge Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. Over the course of a rigorous confirmation process, Judge Alito proved himself to be a man of stellar character, great intelligence and judicial restraint," Dr. Coburn said.
"Judge Alito also proved himself to be the type of justice Oklahomans want on the Supreme Court. I received countless letters and phone calls in support of Judge Alito because Oklahomans recognize he will be a justice who will not make new law, but interpret the law. Judge Alito also understands that judges are not politicians and he will respect the balance of power among the branches of our government as established in the Constitution," Dr. Coburn said.
"I hope President Bush will have the opportunity to nominate another justice to the Supreme Court who will help swing the court back toward the Constitution," Dr. Coburn said.
