HULSHOF STATEMENT REGARDING 2006 MISSOURI RIVER OPERATING PLAN
WASHINGTON, DC. - - The following is a statement from U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof regarding the US Army Corps of Engineers' 2006 Operating Plan for the Missouri River:
"I am profoundly disappointed that the Corps of Engineers is moving ahead with its misguided plan to include two spring rises in the 2006 Operating Plan. Spring rises will increase the risk of flooding for all who live along the banks of the Missouri River in exchange for an unknown benefit to a fish. This decision was not based upon sound science or empirical data.
"To add insult to injury, not only is the federal government unleashing a literal flood upon those who live along the river, they're also refusing to cover any damages from these spring rises. The Risk Management Agency has determined that damages resulting from these spring rises cannot be covered because it does not qualify as a naturally occurring event.'
"There is no doubt in my mind that the flawed policy put forth today will come back to haunt all of us who are stakeholders along the Missouri River."
