Langevin Signs Onto Ethics Reform Package
January 18, 2006

(Warwick, R.I.)-Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI) today declared his support for Democratic ethics reform efforts in Congress and announced his cosponsorship of a resolution aimed at cracking down on abuses of power. The legislation was sponsored by Congressman Dave Obey (D-WI), senior Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee.

The 14-point reform package is designed to weaken lobbyist influence, strengthen fiscal discipline, curb abuses of power, outlaw the use of earmarks to buy votes for questionable legislation, create more time for serious Congressional oversight and prevent last minute legislative items from being slipped into conference reports between the House and Senate without a full public vote by the conference committee.

"Over the last few months it has become abundantly clear that reform is needed in the House," said Langevin. "Rhode Islanders know that I have long been a champion of accountability and transparency in government. I fully support the adoption of new, more stringent levels of oversight in Washington."
