Proclamation - Martin Luther King Day

Proclamation - Martin Luther King Day

by the
Governor of the State of California

Few national figures have had such a profound impact on California as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He devoted his life to seeking equality, and his pursuit of justice reflected the highest ideals of the Civil Rights Movement in America.

Images of the GovernorDecades after he shared his vision of a unified nation, Dr. King's life continues to be a cause for great celebration and his lessons a source of inspiration. He knew that the answer to violence was not to respond in kind, but to spread one's message with a persistent hope and steadfast determination. Dr. King longed for a place where people are "not judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character."

In addition to fighting segregation, he encouraged community service as a means to achieving greatness. Motivated by a similar concern for others, we can reach new heights of compassion by following in his footsteps.

Californians pay tribute to Dr. King's teachings by promoting tolerance and honoring him as one of the greatest champions of justice in American history.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER, Governor of the State of California, do hereby proclaim January 16, 2006, as "Martin Luther King Jr. Day."
California Seal IN WITNESS WHEREOF I have here unto set my hand and caused the Great Seal of the State of California to be affixed this the twelfth day of January 2006.
