Rep. Allen Announces $155,000 Grant for I-295 Exit 3 Project in South Portland

December 29, 2005

Final federal installment for project to relieve congestion and improve safety at Exit 3

Washington, D.C.---U.S. Representative Tom Allen announced today that the U.S. Department of Transportation's Federal Highway Administration has provided the balance of the federal funding necessary for the I-295 Exit 3 ramp project in South Portland, or $154,933. The project includes a new on-ramp onto I-295 at Exit 3 and modifications to Westbrook Street.

"I'm pleased that all of the federal funding for this important project has become available," said Representative Allen. "These improvements to Exit 3 are important to South Portland. They will support the redevelopment of Long Creek into affordable housing and will alleviate congestion for local residents, shoppers in the Maine Mall area, and employees of the new U.S. Postal Service Processing Center in Scarborough."

The Exit 3 project includes federal, state, local, and private resources, with the city contributing more than $1 million and private financing providing another $800,000. The federal share of the project, $800,000, was secured last year by Rep. Allen in the FY2005 Transportation-Treasury Appropriations Bill.
