Gov. Sanford Requests Disaster Declaration

LETTER TO PRESIDENT SEEKS FEDERAL ASSISTANCE FOR UPSTATE ICE STORM RECOVERY

Columbia, S.C. - December 30, 2005 - Governor Mark Sanford today issued the following statement on the letter he sent this afternoon to President George W. Bush requesting a federal disaster declaration for the Upstate in the wake of the ice storm that struck earlier this month. The declaration, if granted by the White House, would provide Public Assistance Program help for reimbursement to local and state government and to non-profit co-ops for certain expenses they incurred:

"A lot of families and businesses across the Upstate have struggled as a result of this storm," said Gov. Sanford. "Now that local, state and federal officials have completed their damage assessments, it's important that we take this next step quickly to make sure the process of securing these federal dollars is moving forward. This is an important part of the process in terms of making sure the state does whatever it can to expedite the cleanup and recovery from this storm."
