Senator Santorum Comments on Today's Historic Election in Iraq

U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today released the following statement regarding the historic election taking place in Iraq:

"Today, millions of Iraqis are voting in their third national and democratic election. They will elect 275 individuals to serve as their voice on the Council of Representatives (CoR). The members of the CoR will then select a prime minister to run the government, a presidency council and a cabinet of ministers. The first permanent, truly democratic election in the long history of the Middle East, this is a historic moment for the Iraqi people and for the entire world. With over 15 million Iraqi citizens registered to vote, today is a reminder of the incredible and historic progress being made in Iraq. Today's elections, and the commitment of the Iraqi people to exercise their newly aquired right to vote, show that their confidence in the Iraqi security forces has never been higher.

"There has been an overwhelming desire of the Iraqi people to participate in the democratic process and have a voice in the future of their country. Surely, what happened today will go a long way towards ensuring the spread of peace and democracy in Iraq, the Middle-East, and beyond."
