Pelosi: ‘President's Rhetoric Does Not Match the Reality of America's Working Families'

Washington, D.C. - House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today in response to President Bush's speech in North Carolina on the economy:

"In his speech today, the President again used rhetoric that does not match the reality of America's working families. In North Carolina alone, fewer Americans are covered by health insurance and family income has dropped since the President took office.

"As he spoke before a group of working Americans, the President touted his tax cuts for the wealthy few - Americans who make more than $1 million will receive an average tax cut of $103,000 or nearly 140 times the average tax cut that middle-income households will receive.

"Meanwhile, the budget deficit is out of control, and Americans are facing record-high heating costs, rising health care bills, and the threat of unemployment. Platitudes and photo-ops by the President suggesting a strong economy simply do not make it so.

"Democrats stand united to build an America that works for everyone, not just the wealthy few."
