Fitzpatrick Reacts to the Departure of David Gunn, CEO of Amtrak

Calls for Amtrak to Reform and Improve America's Rail Service

Washington, Nov 9 - This morning, Congressman Michael Fitzpatrick learned that Amtrak's board of directors have decided to fire the rail system' president and CEO, David Gunn. Upon hearing the news, Fitzpatrick made the following statement:

"During the past few months, I have had the opportunity to work with Mr. Gunn closely on issues important to Bucks County's rail system; most recently in keeping the Cornwell Heights Amtrak station up and running and postponing a commuter rate increase.

As the board moves forward to pick a successor, I hope that they see this change as an opportunity to choose a CEO that understands the need to make rail transportation fiscally viable and attractive to American travelers. As the Co-chair of the House Passenger Rail Caucus, I know that there is growing interest in rail transportation. The recent up-surge in gasoline prices as well as the continual increase road congestion presents Amtrak with an opportunity to transform rail into a model for mass transportation in the 21st Century.

In order to achieve this goal, the Amtrak board must work to create a stable financial outlook for Amtrak as well as an improved infrastructure. I along with the members of my caucus, as well as my colleagues in the northeast am eager to see a vibrant rail system in America. This is Amtrak's chance to take a bold step in this direction and I hope they take it."

Congressman Fitzpatrick is the co-chair of the House Passenger Rail Caucus, a bi-partisan groups of House Members dedicated to enhancing our rail systems nation-wide. Earlier in the year, Congressman Fitzpatrick took to the floor of the House to call for the restoration of funding for Amtrak in President Bush's FY2006 budget request.

Congressman Mike Fitzpatrick is serving his first term as Representative of the 8th District of Pennsylvania, which includes Bucks County and portions of Montgomery County and Philadelphia.
