Isakson Co-Sponsors Legislation To End Reckless Spending, Government Waste

U.S. Senator Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.) today announced that he is co-sponsoring two pieces of legislation that seek to end reckless federal spending and government waste by forcing Congress and the Administration to regularly examine and demand accountability from programs that receive federal tax dollars.

"We must do a better job of guarding the taxpayers' money. We must demand that every program that receives federal dollars is worthy of those dollars and is achieving the results we expected," Isakson said. "So these two pieces of legislation are about changing our process and working to eliminate government waste."

Isakson is co-sponsoring the Government Reorganization and Program Performance Improvement Act, which creates a commission that will require Congress and the Executive Branch to regularly and formally examine whether Federal programs and agencies are achieving, or have achieved, desired results for the American people. The commission would determine if these programs continue to serve an essential function or if they should be eliminated.

The legislation also allows for the President to recommend the creation of individual Results Commissions. These would be targeted at specific programs and policy areas in order to eliminate duplicate programs and reorganize and strengthen efforts currently underway.

Isakson also is co-sponsoring the Commission on the Accountability and Review of Federal Agencies Act, which establishes a bipartisan commission to review federal domestic agencies and programs within agencies in an effort to eliminate federal spending on programs that are duplicative, wasteful, inefficient or outdated. The commission would make recommendations for the elimination or realignment of such programs, and the Congress would be required to vote either up or down on these recommendations.

"We must take large and immediate steps to end the reckless spending that is threatening the future of our nation," Isakson said. "Congress must become better stewards of the taxpayers' money."
