Dr. Coburn Comments on Harriet Miers' Decision to Withdraw Her Nomination to U.S. Supreme Court

U.S. Senator Tom Coburn, M.D. (R-OK) released the following statement today regarding Harriet Miers' decision to withdraw her nomination to the U.S. Supreme Court:

"Today's decision brings to a close a difficult chapter for a woman of great character and accomplishment. Ms. Miers' decision to put the interests of the country ahead of her own desires is further testament to her personal integrity."

"I would urge the President to quickly choose a new nominee among the large pool of highly qualified candidates who are capable of being confirmed by the Senate. The American people should pray for our President as he faces this difficult decision."

"The selection of the next Supreme Court justice will affect the lives of every American citizen for decades. Yet, as critical as this decision is I would remind my friends and allies that the Supreme Court will not, by itself, renew American culture. Families, not judges, are the foundation of our society. The greatest political act we can do is to love our families and win the hearts and minds of our neighbors. Our actions and rhetoric should match this undeniable reality."
