UDALL BLASTS FEMA FOR EXTENDING MICHAEL BROWN'S CONTRACT
October 27, 2005
WASHINGTON - U.S. Representative Tom Udall, D-N.M., today condemned the decision by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to extend former Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Director Michael Brown's contract for thirty days. Brown's resignation from the post in early September came after FEMA offered an abysmal attempt at assisting victims of Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast.
"The continued use of taxpayer money to pay Michael Brown for a job he failed to do only further demonstrates the cronyism and corruption of the White House. More than a month after he resigned in disgrace, the Administration continues to write Brown a paycheck, and continues to deny the American people of true, competent leadership."
On October 26, 2005, DHS Secretary Michael Chertoff confirmed that Brown had been asked to extend his stay at the Department to help complete a review of FEMA's failed response to Hurricane Katrina. Brown, whose salary as FEMA Director was $148,000, can be expected to collect nearly $12,500 during the thirty day extension.
