Senator Santorum Fights for Health Care for Pennsylvanians

Promotes the Need to Strengthen Medicaid and Medicare

During yesterday's markup of the budget reconciliation package by the Senate Finance Committee, U.S. Senator Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, discussed the importance of the Medicaid program.

"I am committed to strengthening the Medicaid program so that it continues to serve its primary purpose, which is to provide benefits to our most vulnerable Americans," said Senator Santorum. "We must ensure that Medicaid reforms do not harm beneficiaries, but help beneficiaries by creating a stronger program that gets resources to people in need, rather than squandering precious taxpayer dollars on fraud, waste, and abuse."

Senator Santorum worked tirelessly on behalf of patients, hospitals, and other healthcare providers across the Commonwealth, securing a number of key provisions that are vitally important to Pennsylvania, and protecting patients and providers from many potentially damaging provisions in the budget reconciliation package. Senator Santorum thanked the Committee for including these provisions in the final package that he strongly advocated for, including addressing Medicare payments for inpatient rehabilitation hospitals, protecting hospital and home health payments, and providing a Medicare payment update for dialysis providers. Senator Santorum worked closely with his fellow GOP Finance Committee members to put together a package that does not harm beneficiaries one bit - in fact, savings are put back into programs that help those most in need.

Throughout his nearly eleven years serving in the United States Senate, Senator Santorum has championed the healthcare needs of his constituents. As he travels to all 67 counties in Pennsylvania annually, Senator Santorum takes to heart the concerns of Pennsylvanians about how health care in the Commonwealth and across our nation can be improved. As a member of the Senate Finance Committee, which has jurisdiction over Medicare and Medicaid, Senator Santorum continues to advocate on behalf of Pennsylvanians, working with his Senate colleagues to ensure that Medicare and Medicaid continue to provide high-quality health care, enhance covered services to beneficiaries, and ensure the financial stability of healthcare providers.

Senator Santorum will continue to fight to ensure Pennsylvanians have access to quality and affordable health care. To that end, just this year, Senator Santorum introduced the Community Health Center Volunteer Physician Protection Act; Kidney Care Quality and Improvement Act; Colon Cancer Screen for Life Act; Combating Autism Act; Lyme and Tick-borne Disease Prevention, Education, and Research Act; Clinical Research Act; and the Healthcare Tax Relief for the Uninsured Act of 2005, among many other healthcare measures that he has supported.
