Pelosi Statement on the Death of Rosa Parks

Washington, D.C.- Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi released the following statement today on the death of Rosa Parks:

"Today as we grieve the loss of Rosa Parks, we recommit ourselves to her lifelong struggle to create an America that reflects the hopes and aspirations of all of its citizens. In her death, we are reminded that the power of one person, driven by the ideals of justice, is infinite.

"The fire of the civil rights movement was sparked by a single act of defiance, by one visionary woman. It was an act that all were capable of, but only Rosa Parks was courageous enough to make - and did so in a quiet rebellion of refusing to accept and submit to injustice. In honor of this remarkable woman and her indomitable spirit, we must recommit to rooting out injustice wherever it takes harbor, even if doing so comes at great personal cost.

"It is with great sadness and respect that I extend deepest condolences to Mrs. Parks' family and friends. I hope it is a comfort to them that the entire country mourns their loss and are praying for them at this sad time. I extend special words of condolence to my colleague Congressman John Conyers for his personal loss of a longtime friend and aide. I hope it is comforting to know that Mrs. Parks sat down so others could stand up."
