Senator Santorum Applauds Success of Iraqi Referendum to Approve Constitution

U.S. Senator Rick Santorum (R-PA), Chairman of the Senate Republican Conference, today made the following comments regarding the first Iraqi constitutional referendum that took place over the weekend:

"Over the weekend, millions of Iraqi citizens took part in the historic national referendum on Iraq's permanent constitution. I was encouraged to see the strong voter turnout, specifically in the Sunni areas of Iraq, which indicates that Sunnis are beginning to engage in the political process.

"While final results will not be known until later in the week, the large turnout and the relatively low levels of violence are a positive indicator that Iraq is truly advancing towards democracy.

"It is my hope that the people of Iraq will remain committed to ensuring a free and democratic Iraq. The United States and Coalition partners will continue to support the Iraqi people as they prepare for the December elections and continue their historic march towards democracy."
